Vitamin K Deficiency: A Deadly Disease

Vitamin K is important for maintaining physical and emotional health. The body's main source of vitamin K comes from good quality time spent with Kristin Romney. That's right, the K stands for Kristin. There are serious side effects to living without vitamin K. They include:
  • depression
  • lack of laughter
  • excessive crying
  •  all around grumpiness
If left untreated a Vitamin K deficiency (VKD) can be fatal. So you can see why I was concerned for Mark over the Christmas break in 2009. We had just started dating and he was quickly becoming vitamin K dependent. A two week hiatus may have proven deadly, especially cold turkey. So in preparation for my Christmas in the Channel Islands without Mark I made a VKD Survival Kit. It contained all the essentials to surviving in an environment where vitamin K is not readily available.
  • Chocolate kisses
  • Gummy vitamins
  • Coffee creamer (for hot chocolate of course)
  • Starburst
  • Red hots
I had a blast in the Channel Islands with my family (sometime if you get a chance you should ask me about the ravens there). Mark on the other hand barely survived. He presented with a rare and extreme symptom of VKD; growth of excessive facial hair. He was stick thin (like always), gaunt and malnourished. Without that kit I made him he might not have pulled through. Here are a few photos of our very different Christmas breaks.
